1)     Most efficient way to do stairs
2)     Most common in new home construction
3)     No turns

1) has some landing in middle
2) used when need to turn
3) may also be a long L


Double L stairs
1)two turns
2) two landings not counting top and bottom
3) not frequently used in residential cases

U Stairs
1) may be wide or narrow U
2) has a landing in between top and bottom
3) narrow U has little space on middle landing

Winder Stairs
1) pie-shaped landing
2) used when no space for L
3) provides a tread with equal width to regular steps

Spiral Stairs
1) take up little space
2) often need another type of stairs to same floor
3) may be dangerous
Circular stairs
1) similar to spiral
2) more customized
3)take up little space

Roof Styles

Gable

·          Easy to build

·         Sheds water well

·          Provides for ventilation



Hip

·          Doesn’t provide for ventilation

·         Increases chance for leakage

·          More difficult to build than Gable style

 

Shed

·         More pitch than a flat roof

·          Frequently used for additions

·         3 feet of rise for 12 feet of run

 

Mansard

·          French design

·          Difficult to design

·          Doesn’t have interesting lines




Gambrel

·         Aka “Barn roof”

·          Provides additional head room

·          Used mostly on barns


Butterfly

·         Rarely used

·          Provides plenty of light

·          Drainage is a problem

 

A-Frame

·          Not just roof, but also walls

·          Originally used for cottages

·          Used for homes and churches more recently


Free Form

·          Complete freedom

·          Urethane foam is popular material choice

·          Strong and weather resistant
